Abstract

Summary In this article part of the data, gathered during the second phase of the research project ‘Cognitions of (student) teachers concerning good teaching’, are presented. The findings of Repgrid interviews with 60 first year student teachers attending elementary school teacher training institutes in the Netherlands, have been content analysed. Six ‘shared dimensions’ have been traced, constructs that are shared by 50% or more of the students. The significant differences between the mean scores on ‘me as a teacher’ and ‘me as an ideal teacher’ on four of the shared dimensions indicate discrepancies between the professional functioning of students at the beginning of their study and the professional functioning they strive for. ∗ This article was prepared with the assistance of R. Flohil and M. Kool.
