Abstract

Conversation Analysis is the study of how social action is brought about through the close organisation of talk. It can be applied, but the term ‘Applied Conversation Analysis’ has various shades of meaning. The two most familiar are that the application of Conversation Analysis (CA) to the talk of an institution like the school or the medical clinic can shed light on its workings; and that the CA researcher can suggest improvements in the service that such an institution provides. Those two senses of the term (which Richards, 2005, calls ‘discovery’ and ‘prescription’ respectively) capture a great deal of what is called applied CA, but not all. A survey of the literature suggests four more senses of the term, making six in all.KeywordsRape MythConversation AnalysisSocial SceneLocal SceneClose OrganisationThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
