Abstract

Six great scientists have been associated with the development of otorhinolaryngology in Hungary. Jan Nepomuk Czermak invented a laryngeal mirror. Endre Hőgyes described the vestibulo-ocular reflex arc and made the first nystagmogram. His audiometer was one of the earliest. Adam Politzer founded a world-famous school of otology. Robert Barany created clinical neuro-otology. Aurel Rethi developed newtechniques in the surgery of the larynx. George Bekesi founded the modern theory of hearing.
