Abstract

This article argues that cognitive models of performance judgment may help to explain the relationships between situational constraints and subjective measures of performance, such as ratings. A cognitive decision model is proposed to show how cognitive and attributional processes can result in the attenuation of correlations between measures of constraints and performance by predicting when supervisors are likely to (1) perceive constraints in their subordinates' situations and (2) discount the effects of those constraints on subordinates' performance. Hypotheses are offered for testing.
