Abstract

To Editor.— As medical students, we found Surgeon General's report on AIDS 1 to be informative and understandable. The report is intended to provide the people of United States with the necessary understanding of AIDS; however, as written, it is not likely to do so. Using Gunning's 2 Fog Index (a method of determining readability of instructional materials) on several 100-word passages, we found report to be at 15th-grade reading level. This is far above average reading level of adult Americans (generally accepted as ninth grade or below). Clearly, AIDS is a disease of major concern to people of United States; as stated by Dr Koop, public education is vital to control of its spread.
