Abstract

In disturbance management of complex dynamic systems it is crucial that operators are capable of assessing disturbance situations at a plant-wide level. Situation assessment forms the basis for problem formulation, i.e. a conception of the goals and the possible strategies of intervention, which in turn provides the context for problem solving activities. In response to unfamiliar disturbance situations it is particularly difficult for operators to perform a proper assessment of the situation and information systems supporting this task are needed. This paper describes a framework for situation assessment based on Multilevel Flow Modeling.
