Abstract

Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility (RWDF) site selection is critical due to its significant impact on ecology and regional environmental health. Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) systems have a wide range of uses in applications such as urban and regional planning, land suitability mapping, and site selection. With the development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), various MCDM methods have been applied in spatial dimensions. The present study aimed to achieve suitable site selection for the storage of radioactive wastes produced in the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Turkey using GIS-based MCDM methods. For this purpose, 12 data layers were used to determine the most suitable sites. In the result map produced, suitable areas were determined for RWDF. The results indicate that GIS-based MCDM is an effective evaluation tool in RWDF site selection.
