Abstract

We report on the gas-phase reaction of Cl with CH 3 CD 2 CH 3 and CD 3 CH 2 CD 3 to form HCl or DCl. Cl atoms are generated by the 351-nm photolysis of Cl 2 , and both the HCl and DCl products are detected via 2+1 multiphoton ionization at ∼240 nm. The use of labeled compounds allows positive identification of individual reactive sites within the propane molecule. With respect to the reaction products over the quantum states probed, DCl is formed with nearly equal probability independent of whether CH 3 CD 2 CH 3 or CD 3 CH 2 CD 3 is the target molecule
