Abstract

A discussion of the importance of site investigation work in tunnelling projects, based on work carried out at the TRRL, outlines the objectives, procedures and general considerations. The article illustrates the application of these principles by outlining case studies of five tunnel construction projects. Ground conditions are related in the article to tunnel design and construction experience. The projects described, which are intended to illustrate shallow and deep tunnelling in London and lias clays, coal measures, drift deposits and made ground, include the Sydenham Road sewer tunnel, the River Medway cable tunnels, the Empingham Reservoir tunnels, the Tyneside South Bank interceptor sewer and the River Tyne siphon sewer tunnel.
