The hazards and degree of difficulty involved in excavation can have a significant effect on the costs and, ultimately, on the feasibility of a construction project. To better assess the overall feasibility and to develop design criteria for a construction project, the proposed excavation should be evaluated as part of the geotechnical site investigation process. Use of the tools of engineering geology is important in the site investigation process. In this paper we will look at the role of engineering geology in the site investigation. That is, the function of the engineering geologist as a member of the geotechnical design team, and the benefits of a greater utilization of engineering geology to both design and construction.
