Abstract

SYNOPSIS The literature on site index is reviewed. Stem analysis techniques have been the preferred method for data collection for the construction of site index curves, but the increasing use of permanent sample plot measurements is noted. A wide variety of site index models have been used. Modern trends emphasise maximum likelihood estimation procedures, differential equations and the incorporation of stochasticity. Site index models for Pinus radiata receive additional attention.
