Abstract

A new, two-stage method of developing site index equations and curves from stem analysis data is described. The linear relationship between site index and height for a given age class is confirmed. Regression lines are calculated at 10-year intervals and the relationship between the intercepts, a 0, and the slopes, a 1, of these lines, and age are established. From these, the final form of the site index equation could be derived and its coefficients established from estimates of height calculated at 10-year intervals from the individual tree height/age curves by conventional regression analysis. This site index equation is accurate except for combinations of high site index and high age.
