Abstract

Equations are derived describing the effects of Donnan Exclusion Failure on the potentiometric responses of mobile site, ion exchange membranes. Analysis of response character to changing bathing activities on one side, follows most readily from concomitant site profile variations. Changing interfacial site concentrations after co-ion penetration leads to the possibility of three linear regions of potential response. The slopes, positions along the activity axis, and number of linear response regions are shown to be dependent on penetrating ion mobilities, external bathing activities, and a quantity linearly related to total average site concentration. As a consequence of these findings, a new method for determining the quantity related to site concentration is proposed.
