Abstract

The effect of local site conditions on the characteristics of ground shaking is usually incorporated into building codes by specifying several site categories and assigning a site coefficient for each site category. In the 1994 NEHRP Recommended Provisions, site categories and site coefficients were revised based on the results from the investigation of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and other research studies. In this paper, we use a probabilistic approach to establish the statistics of site coefficients for the new site categories specified in the 1994 NEHRP Provisions using the ground motions expected to occur in the eastern United States. The site coefficients obtained from this study are compared to those specified in the NEHRP Provisions.
