Abstract

Abstract The Sistine Chapel is located in the Vatican Palace and named for Pope Sixtus IV. Baccio Pontelli drafted the architectural plans. From 1473 to 1481, Florentine architect Giovanni dei Dolci supervised its construction. The chapel is rectangular in shape, and the measurements correspond to the dimensions of the Solomonic Temple. Vasari indicated that Sixtus IV summoned Sandro Botticelli to Rome in 1481, and commissioned him with the responsibility of leading the artists who would fresco the walls. Botticelli enlisted the assistance of prominent Cortonan, Florentine, and Umbrian artists. Cosimo Roselli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino (Vannucci), and Luca Signorelli assisted Botticelli in completing the wall paintings.
