Abstract

There is a long tradition of quality improvement in Aragon. In the 1980s, numerous health professionals developed activities with this aim.Since the end of 1999, the Aragonese health service has aimed to stimulate a culture of quality improvement. Thus, in 2000 the Program of Support for Quality Improvement Initiatives in the Aragonese health service was introduced. When the Spanish public health system was decentralized, the Aragonese health service was able to implement a quality assurance system that takes the EFQM European Excellence Model as a reference. This system is currently implementing its plan of action in three areas: maintaining and developing a frame of reference for quality, guaranteeing an adequate structure for the quality assurance system, and improving the Aragonese health service from the point of view of patients, staff and processes.
