Abstract

The management of street lights handled by the power utility company and localauthorities are typically faced with the problem of high operational expenditure, low efficiency and increasecustomer complaint. By operational efficiency, how faulty street lights are managed effectively through theuse of a low cost automated system, thus improving efficiency and enhancing customer services. Currentlythese maintenance routines are conducted daily in parallel to records of faulty lights reported bycustomers. These incurred substantially high operational expenditure year to year. The objective of thisresearch is to develop a low cost SLMS ( Street Light Management System ) with features suffice enough for theutility companies to manage and maintain street lights effectively and also monitor power quality to ensurecontinuous and uninterrupted supply to customers. SLMS consists of interface modules installed at thesubstation or street lights panel to collect the status of power over each feeder cables. Information of faulty lightscollected by the FIU ( Feeder Interface Unit ) is passed back to FC ( Feeder Controller ). The FC managingseveral feeder pillars and relay back the information received from FIU to system server are located at thecentral office by using SMS-GSM network. Those send an alert SMS to operational personnel to inform them ofthe faulty record. This SLMS provides centralized real-time information about street lights, information of faulty lights, GIS ( Geographic Information System ), Power Efficiency 42% by optimizing the use of street light and keeping records for management reporting and analysis. The result of current measurements has a mean deviation 1.29%
