Abstract

The edentulous posterior maxilla presents special challenges to the implant oral surgeon that are unique compared to other areas in the mouth. The edentulous posterior maxilla with alveolar resorption and increased pneumatization of the sinus limits the quantity and quality of bone necessary for successful implant placement. As the edentulous area continues to atrophy there is a decrease in bone height and density and an increase in antral pneumatization.
