Abstract

In this research, density and infrared transmittance of chalcogenide glass sintered by two methods; tube furnace sintering (TBS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS), were studied and characterized. In TBS, the effects of sintering dwell temperature, dwell time, and heating rate on final density and transmittance were investigated. The TBS test showed that the transmittance was seriously deteriorated above the sintering temperature of 380 °C, resulted from the crystallization, Se evaporation, and pore expansion. To overcome the limitation of TBS, SPS was employed by adjusting the sintering condition. The results of a comparative study indicated that sintering temperature is a dominant factor affecting the transmittance and density of sintered glasses, closely related to pore fraction.
