Abstract

Spiny lobster are important product of exportation in Northeastern of Brasil. There is a visible preoccupation about the reported decline in the catch of lobster. One of the solution to this problem is through culture of spiny lobster. There is no commercial juveniles growout in Brazil and the world culture of juvenile spiny lobster is still conducted on only a small commercial scale. Since 1995 Brazilian researchers have made efforts to rear spiny lobster Panulirus argus and P. laevicauda from the pueruli or early juvenile to the adult stage. The investigations involve capturing pueruli or juveniles and growing them in confinement. This possibility has been considered in Ceara State’s where young P. argus and P. laevicauda can be find in abundance. More research is needed before commercial-scale culture. Strategy for spiny lobster growout is suggested in detail in this review and it is certainly the topic of the moment. The review showed that the spiny lobster juvenile can be held in communal culture systems, adapt well to the artificial conditions with feeding and growth characteristics that make spiny lobster a suitable crustacean for commercial culture.
