Abstract

tAim of this study was to determine environmental literacy levels of classroom teachers and to analyze it with regard to some variables. In the study, survey model - one of the quantitative research models – was employed. The sample of the study was 132 classroom teachers working actively in Hatay province of Turkey. The environmental literacy scale developed by Kisoglu (2009, 110- 115) was used as data collection tool. In data analysis, frequency, percentile, academic mean and standard deviation, independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA and integer tests were employed. According to the results of the research, it was found that environmental literacy levels of the classroom teachers were high. It was also concluded that there were not any significant differences among the classroom teachers in terms of gender, seniority, location of the school and sources from which information about environment were obtained. On the other hand it was revealed that environmental literacy levels of the classroom teachers who had not received environmental education were higher than the ones who had received it. Finally, it was found that environmental literacy levels of the classroom teachers with seniority of 16 years and over were higher than of the classroom teachers with seniority of 0-5 years, 6-10 years and 11-15 years
