Singularities, Bibliography of Theatre History in Canada: The Beginnings to 1984

Abstract

In the Preface to A Bibliography of Canadian Theatre History 1583-1975, published in 1976, editors John Ball and Richard Plant note the lack of an “extensive bibliography of published materials relating to Canadian theatre history”. While their earlier work was a laudable effort, their “revision and continuation” of this work, published in 1993, deserves to be recognized as the first comprehensive bibliography of Canadian theatre history. More than tripling the number of entries listed in the first edition and its 1975-76 supplement, this handsome and impressive volume is comprised of over 10,800 entries. Coverage has been extended to 1984, and, as the editors state in the Preface, “nearly one-third of the present volume consists of titles published before the appearance of [the] original work but collected since then”.
