Nuclear singlet states may have lifetimes that are much longer than the conventional relaxation time of nuclear spin magnetization. The article explains how these states may be observed and exploited in solution NMR. Potential applications are discussed. Keywords: singlet states; long-lived spin states; relaxation; parahydrogen; spin-locking; hyperpolarization
