Abstract

The creation and growth of the Houston Galveston Institute (HGI) Walk-In Counseling Program has been very exciting. At the HGI Walk-In Program, most of the time, single-session therapy is conducted using live reflecting teams, enriching the counseling process. One of the most important concepts of Walk-In Program is that it offers a welcoming and accessible environment to guests. The Walk-In program operates six days a week, Monday through Friday from 3:00 –7:00 p.m. and all day on Saturday. Sessions with clients are typically one hour, though occasional situations demand longer sessions. The reflecting teams at HGI consist of graduate students in counseling, marriage and family therapy, trainee therapists, intern or fully licensed professional counselors, licensed or associate marriage and family therapists. HGI's volunteer therapists come from many different levels of experience and training backgrounds; the majority come from the field of family therapy, counseling, and social work.
