Abstract

This paper presents a novel approach of non-contact vibration sensing utilizing only a single ultrasonic (US) air-transducer. Traditionally, non-contact vibration detection utilizes standard continuous wave sonar radar configuration with one transmitter and one receiver in place that picks up the Doppler signal. In this work, we exploited impedance measurement of a single piezo element, an US air transducer, to sense vibrations unobtrusively at short distances. The proposed approach simplifies sensor configuration and electronics design requirements as it only uses a single transducer. Vibrations of single, dual, and time varying frequencies have been successfully measured with more than 99% accuracy.
