Abstract

A 12F computer-aided mechanical aspiration thrombectomy system with a proprietary microchip computer program allowing for controlled aspiration in flowing blood and continuous aspiration in thrombus (12CMAT) (Lightning, Penumbra Inc., Alameda, Calif) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2020. This new computer-aided system was designed to reduce blood loss and increase the ability for single session therapy of iliofemoral DVT (IFDVT). This engineering advance in theory results in decreased blood loss despite being used with a large-bore 12F catheter.
