Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether the single conventional scintillation counter available in most hospitals could be used for screening patients suspected of having unilateral renal hypertension, without resorting to the use of the more costly and complicated dual system. Sixty patients were studied, using separate injections of a radioactive medium for each kidney area. This study demonstrated (1) good reproducibility of the vascular phase in a given kidney, (2) only slight scattered radiation from the opposite kidney, and (3) a similariy of the vascular phase of the 2 kidneys in normal individuals. Two of the 46 hypertensive patients studied were found to have abnormal vascular patterns.
