Abstract

Two novel single-pass laser welding methods were performed to join TC4 Ti alloy and 304 SS using V interlayer and V/Cu bilayer. In order to avoid the formation of brittle Ti-based IMCs, two hybrid joints based on different welding mechanisms were created. The joint using the V interlayer with a fusion weld and a diffusion weld was obtained. The fusion weld was formed on Ti alloy, diffusion weld was formed at the Ti alloy-SS interface. The joint using the V/Cu bilayer with a fusion weld, a diffusion weld, a braze weld was obtained. The fusion weld was formed on Ti alloy, V and Ti alloy were joined by atomic interdiffusion, SS and Cu were joined by brazing. The tensile strength and quality of joints was evaluated.
