Abstract

Single-layer-coated optical devices for the manipulation of polarized light are reviewed. This includes thin film reflection polarizers, quarter-wave and half-wave retarders, division-of-amplitude polarizing, polarization-independent and polarization-preserving beam splitters, division-of-wavefront reflective binary polarizers, and polarization-corrective optical coatings for multielement reflectors such as beam displacers, roof-top reflectors, axicons and waxicons. The incident light is assumed to be monochromatic or quasi-monochromatic and the film and substrate are homogenous, linear, non-magnetic, optically isotropic and are separated by plane-parallel boundaries.
