Abstract

We have studied the low temperature tunneling behaviour of both single and double tunnel junctions with adjustable capacitances in the 10-18 F range. The tunneling characteristics of single junctions show clear evidence of single electron tunneling, induced by a Coulomb blockade. In a series configuration of two small capacitance tunnel junctions, with an isolated small particles as a common electrode, we observe a steplike structure in the I-V characteristics, due to the quantization of the charge on the small particle. The measurements are in good agreement with semi-classical Monte Carlo simulations.
