Abstract

A modified floating zone crystal growth technique (traveling solvent float zone, TSFZ, technique) was successfully applied to single crystal growth of yttrium iron garnet (YIG: Y 3Fe 5O 12) with the aid of a uniquely stable apparatus of the radiation convergence type. A series of experimental evaluations of this technique and of the resulting YIG single crystals were carried out and it was demonstrated that the TSFZ technique can provide large single crystals (5–10 mm in diameter and 50–100 mm in length) of YIG of good quality, grown along a desired direction at a comfortable growth rate of about 1 mm h -1.
