Abstract

Singing groups have been established in various hospitals as quasi-therapeutic social activities. The current study addresses the realization of these activities from the singing leaders’ perspectives in these specific contexts. Standardized telephone interviews were conducted with 20 singing leaders (14 female). Transcriptions of records were validated by means of a Delphi procedure and coded with the software package MAXQDA®. The singing leaders use a range of strategies in response to both therapeutic and pedagogical demands which shape the group singing activities in the diverse settings. Similarities and differences between individual singing groups inside and outside of hospitals are noted. The results suggest the feasibility of group singing in the diverse settings to the benefit across a wide range of hospitalized patients.
