Abstract

Postconditioning (PostC) reduces the lethal tissue reperfusion injury and the generation of reactive oxygen species under normal conditions but its effectiveness is in dispute under pathological conditions. In the present study we sought to determine whether PostC is effective in hypercholesterolemic rabbits treated with placebo or simvastatin. Anesthetized rabbits were subjected to 30 min regional ischemia of the heart, followed by 3 h of reperfusion and randomized into 7 groups as follows: Normal fed animals: Control with no additional intervention, PostC-N group was subjected to 8 cycles of PostC immediately after the end of the index ischemia (8×30 s), PostC-NS group, treated with simvastatin for 3 weeks, and subjected to 8×30 s.
