Abstract

The simultaneous use of cervical traction and activator in the mixed dentition has been described. This clinical study has been complemented by a theoretical investigation based on a research project analyzing the behavior of thirtynine patients with Class II, Division 1 malocclusions. This treatment method permits considerable improvement prior to fixed appliance therapy. The most striking results obtained during an average treatment time of 18 months are the correction of the faulty habits, a reduction of the ANB angle to about half its original value, an extensive true distal movement of the first permanent molars and, finally, a consistent amelioration of facial esthetics. Even though this treatment is started in the mixed dentition it takes less actual chair time, since the subsequent fixed mechanotherapy is shorter and much easier. Last but not least, the iatrogenic hazards due to extensive and prolonged therapy with fixed appliances can be bypassed.
