Abstract

We have employed a one-step water-assisted method to simultaneously synthesize multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphitic rod-like structures and rose petal-like structures from graphite precursor. This method to produce multi-walled carbon nanotubes is reported earlier in the literature; however, previously only multi-walled carbon nanotubes have been reported. We have been able to obtain multi-walled carbon nanotubes, graphitic rod-like structures and rose petal-like structures simultaneously using this method. The multi-walled carbon nanotubes have inner and outer diameters in the range of tens to hundreds of nm and lengths in the range of hundreds of nm. The graphitic rod-like structures have diameters in the range of tens of micrometer and lengths in the range of hundreds of micrometer. The material appears to be a good prospective material for composite applications where increase in mechanical strength is required. SEM, HRTEM and XRD studies of this novel composite material have been done.
