Abstract

Ethanol production from starch was carried out by the process involving simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) using Zymomonas mobilis ATCC 10988. The optimal process conditions of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation were determined by fermenting liquefied starch at different pH values (4,0, 4,5, 5,0) at different temperatures (30, 35¼C) and at different amyloglucosidase (AMG) concentrations (0.005 %, 0.010%, 0.015 %, 0.020 % ml/g starch). The optimum pH and temperature values for simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of starch using Zymomonas mobilis ATCC 10988 were found to be 5.0 and 35^0C, respectively. It was seen that Zymomonas mobilis fermented the starch solution containing 100 g /1 reducing sugar in 24 hours by the SSF process with an ethanol yield of 87%.
