Abstract

Simultaneous measurement of temperature and force based on an open loop using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and demonstrated. A FBG is attached on a special constructed open loop that is composed of two kinds of materials. Using the difference of the Young's modulus and the thermal expansion coefficients for two parts of the FBG, the FBG has two reflection peaks at different wavelength when the temperature and force are applied on the sensor. Two Bragg reflection wavelengths are shift by temperature and force change. Linear response to temperature and force are achieved in the measurable temperature range from 22 to 82°C and in the measurable force range from 0 to 10 N. The value of applied temperature and force can be obtained from the two Bragg wavelength shift via the coefficient matrix. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
