Abstract
A boundary-layer analysis is given for simultaneous free-convection heat and mass transfer in steady laminar flows. Heat, mass, and momentum transfer rates are calculated for the vertical flat plate at finite Prandtl and Schmidt number, and for three-dimensional bodies in the limit of high Prandtl and Schmidt numbers. Aiding and opposed buoyant forces are considered, and an approximate procedure for predicting the onset of flow separation is offered. These results are used to develop improved correlations for predicting heat, mass, and momentum transfer coefficients.
