Abstract

Ionospheric scatter propagation and absorption during an energetic electron precipitation event during daylight in the auroral zone are examined, using bremsstrahlung observations at balloon altitude to compute the precipitating electron flux. The electron spectrum responsible for the event is described as the sum of two exponential spectra, one soft (characteristic energy E 0 = 9 keV) and the other hard ( E 0 = 40 keV). Analysis of the random and systematic errors of the observations places the effective scattering height at 75 ± 2 km.
