Abstract

A simple, precise, accurate and reproducible spectrophotometric method has been developed for the simultaneous estimation of Atenolol and Nifedipine. Atenolol and Nifedipine are used in combined dosage form for cardiovascular diseases. Hence, it is necessary to develop a method to analyze the two drugs simultaneously by UV-spectroscopic method. Simulated salivary fluid of pH 6.8 was used as the medium. Simultaneous equation method was developed as per ICH guidelines. The absorption maxima of two drugs were found to be 274 and 238 nm for Atenolol and Nifedipine respectively. Different analytical parameters such as linearity, precision, and accuracy, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) were determined as per ICH guidelines. Atenolol and Nifedipine obeyed Beer’s law in the concentration range of 50–300 μg/mL and 3–18 μg/mL respectively. The correlation coefficient of these drugs was found to be close to 1.00, indicating good linearity. The % RSD (percent relative standard deviation) was found to be less than 2% as required by ICH guidelines, which indicates the validity of method. The proposed method is recommended for routine analysis since it is rapid, reliable, reproducible, sensitive, economic, selective and specific.
