Abstract

In this letter, we propose and demonstrate a technique, based on radio frequency demodulation, for coherent beam combining (CBC) systems to simultaneously detect beam pointing and optical phase errors for multiple beams using a quadrant photo detector. The standard deviation of the detection accuracy of the beam pointing error was 0.19 μ rad, and that of the residual optical phase error, at the time of optical phase locking, was 0.7°, yielding a high combining efficiency of 99%. This technique has the potential to increase beam combination to over 100 elements and offer efficient and highly scalable CBC systems.
