Abstract

Simultaneous absolute concentrations of ammonia and nitric acid in ambient air were measured with short integration times in Riverside, Calif. A kilometer path-length Fourier transform infrared spectrometer was utilized. During selected episodes, 24 hr high volume particulate samples were also collected and analyzed for ammonium and nitrate ions. Analysis supports the hypothesis that particulate ammonium nitrate is in equilibrium with its precursors, ammonia and HNO/sub 3/. 20 references, 3 tables.
