Abstract
Simultaneous communication (SC) was analyzed from the perspective of 36 professionals who are deaf and working in a post-secondary program for deaf students. A focus group methodology was used to generate discussion regarding features of effective SC. Comments generated during discussions were grouped into the following categories: (a) expressive sign production features, (b) body language and facial expression, (c) oral/aural and simultaneous features, (d) relationship of English and ASL, (e) communication strategies, and (f) the affective domain. In the hands of an experienced practitioner, SC involves the effective combination of aspects of both ASL and English. Deaf professionals in this study indicated that SC, when utilized by an experienced communicator and when “grounded” in effective signing can be an effective medium for communication.
