Abstract

Simultaneous cineradiographic and manometric studies were performed in three patients in whom the esophagus did not empty completely after swallowing barium. By correlating the pressure tracings made at different levels in the esophagus with the movement of esophageal contents observed by cineradiography, the motor incoordination responsible for incomplete emptying seen in patients with achalasia, hypertensive sphincter, and diffuse spasm have been described.
