Abstract

A ‘positional’ multivariable self-tuning controller is derived and extended to admit an ‘incremental’ control policy. Both multivariable self-tuning controllers are capable of multivariable-multirate self-tuning control: different loops making up the multivariable control system can be assigned different control actuation rates. The ‘positional’ and ‘incremental’ algorithms were implemented in the dual-composition control of a pilot scale distillation column. The results show that both algorithms provided good simultaneous regulation of terminal product compositions. The ability of multirate self-tuning control to achieve improved overall performances are also demonstrated.
