Abstract
It is well known that simulators are used in the aviation industry both for initial training and for maintenance of skills. [1] Wong A.K. Full scale computer simulators in anaesthesia training and evaluation. Can J Anesth. 2004; 51: 455-464 Crossref PubMed Scopus (70) Google Scholar The similarities between aviation and anaesthesia have led people to believe that we could use simulators in a similar way. Obstetric anaesthesia is a practical subject demanding quick decisive action, often in situations that have been encountered rarely or never before and in which there is a high degree of emotional overlay. I will show that simulators can be used to develop such skills and to test our acquisition of them, as demanded by competency-based training.
