Key Points Winter Arctic clouds simulated by the polar version of the Weather Research and Forecasting model are compared with satellite retrievals The cloud amount and cloud top height of model simulations agree well with those of satellite retrievals The downward longwave radiation at the surface shows realistic temporal variations, but is sensitive to the cloud microphysics scheme choice
