Abstract

Monitor of All‐sky X‐ray Image (MAXI) is an all‐sky X‐ray Monitor mission that will be deployed on the International Space Station (ISS) in May 2009. The fan‐beam fields of view of MAXI scans nearly all the sky with the ISS going around the Earth. MAXI will detect the prompt emission of GRBs in its field of view. Since MAXI covers the 0.5–30 keV energy range, MAXI is sensitive to X‐ray flashes. MAXI will also observe X‐ray afterglows, in particular bright X‐ray flares such as seen in the Swift GRBs if the MAXI field of view scans of the burst location shortly after the prompt emissions. Detection and location of these events can be disseminated to the community within a minute. We will present the expected detection rates of GRBs and afterglows using the MAXI simulator, which handles various aspects of the observational constraints and the source behavior.
