Abstract

Pneumatic conveyance of particulate materials is very important in many industries, particularly in the coal fired electrical power generation. In order to improve plant control and operational efficiency, it is desirable to know the parameters of the particle flow. This paper presents the principle of an on‐line digital imaging based method for measuring the velocity and size distribution of particles simultaneously. By controlling the time of exposure of a CCD camera, blurred images of moving particles are captured, which contain the information of moving particles. The motion blur parameters (include motion length and motion direction) are first estimated from the acquired images and then used to infer the velocity of particles in the pipeline by estimating the PSF (Point Spread Function) of the blurred image. The relationship between a 2‐D motion blur image and the velocity of moving particles has been established. As to particle sizing, the image has to be deblurred so that the original image can be retrieved and ultimately the particle size distribution can be obtained. The Wiener deconvolution is applied to restore the image degraded due to motion blur. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method is feasible for the on‐line concurrent measurement of particle velocity and size distribution.
