Abstract

ABSTRACT The rivers draining the upland catchments discharge into the long coastal lagoons (as Vembanad backwater lagoon on the west coast), which are also subjected to tidal oscillations through the openings to the sea. The irregular geometry and complexity of the backwater system require a higher order model to simulate the hydrodynamics and the transport of salinity and sediment. However, by a judicious consideration, schematisation of the channels for conveyance and shallow areas as storage areas, the higher order simulation model can be simplified to a one-dimensional simulation model to obtain solutions faster without the necessity of excessive data requirements and computer disc space and RAM capacity.
